Mithali Raj- The Queen of Indian cricket
Mithali Raj is often referred to as the ‘Queen of Indian cricket. She is the most successful batswoman in the history of the Indian women’s cricket team. Raj has played a pivotal role in the team’s success over the years, both as a batsman and as a captain.
Raj made her debut for the Indian women’s cricket team in 1999, at the age of 16. She has since played over 200 matches for the team, including 46 Test matches, 190 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 8 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Raj is the leading run-scorer in the history of the Indian women’s cricket team, with over 10273 runs in all three formats of the game. She is also the only woman cricketer to have scored seven consecutive half-centuries in ODIs.
Raj was appointed the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team in 2005 and led the team to victory in the 2005 World Cup. She also led the team to the final of the 2017 World Cup, where they were defeated by England. Raj was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, in 2015.
Jhulan Goswami- The veteran pacer
One of the most experienced and successful bowlers in the Indian women’s cricket team is Jhulan Goswami. She made her debut on 6th January 2002 against England and has since taken 255 wickets in ODIs. She is the fastest bowler in the world and the only woman to have taken more than 200 wickets in ODIs. In 2007, she was conferred with the Arjuna Award. She was also awarded the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2010.
Harman Preet Kaur- The power hitter
Harman Preet Kaur is one of the most potent hitters in the Indian women’s cricket team. She made her debut for the team on 7th March 2009 against Pakistan and has since played a pivotal role in the team’s success.
Kaur is known for her hard-hitting batting style and her ability to score runs at a quick pace. She is also an excellent fielder, and her all-around skills make her one of the most valuable members of the team.
Kaur has played in two World Cups and was the leading run-scorer for India in the 2017 tournament and in the same year bagged the Arjuna Award. She was also the captain of the team that won the 2018 Asian Cup. She was the first woman player for India to hit a century in T20 International.
Smriti Mandhana- The run machine
Smriti Mandhana is one of the most explosive batswomen in the world. The left-hander from India has been in superb form in the last few years and has been a revelation for the Indian team. She has been India’s leading run-scorer in ODIs and one of the team’s most consistent performers.
Mandhana made her ODI debut against Bangladesh on 10th April 2013 and scored a half-century in her second match. She was the leading run-scorer in the 2014 Women’s Twenty20 World Cup. She bagged the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Award twice in the years 2018 and 2022 by ICC and was declared the best Women’s International Cricketer by BCCI.
The 23-year-old has been in outstanding form in the last few years and has been the backbone of the Indian batting line-up. She has scored centuries against England, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and has been one of the most prolific run-scorers in the world.
Poonam Yadav- The spin wizard
Poonam Yadav is one of the most successful right-arm leg spin bowlers in India. She is a spin wizard who can deceive the best of batsmen. Her international career started in 2013 against Bangladesh and she has been a regular member of the Indian women’s cricket team since then.
Poonam has represented India in 3 World Cups and 3 Asia Cups. She was the leading wicket-taker in the 2017 Women’s World Cup with 12 wickets. Poonam was also the leading wicket-taker in the 2018 Asia Cup with 10 wickets and became India’s highest wicket-taker in Twenty-20 Internationals in September 2018 with 57 wickets.
Deepti Sharma- The all-rounder
Deepti Sharma is an Indian cricketer who plays as an all-rounder in the Indian women’s cricket team. She made her debut for the team in 2014 against South Africa and quickly established herself as a key player, becoming the vice-captain in 2019. She made a world record for herself in an opening partnership of 320 runs with Poonam Raut.
A left-handed batter and right-arm off-spin bowler, Sharma is known for her aggressive batting and for her ability to pick up wickets in the middle overs. Sharma has also taken over 100 wickets in ODIs, with the best figures of 6/20.
Shantha Rangaswamy- The first awardee
Shantha Rangaswamy was the first woman cricketer from India to be awarded the Arjuna Award in 1976 for her incredible contribution to the field of cricket where under her captainship India won its first-ever test match in November 1976 against the West Indies. She was also the first woman to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame and has been conferred the first Lifetime Achievement Award by BCCI.
Neetu Lawrence David- The wicket-taker
Neetu Lawrence David is an Indian woman cricketer. A slow left-arm orthodox bowler, Neetu Lawrence David was a part of the Indian women’s cricket team and made records by taking 100 ODI wickets. She also has the record of taking 8/53 against England in November 1995. She retired from the world of cricket in June 2006 but made back her appearance in India’s Asia Cup played in May 2008. Her last match was against England in 2008.
Shikha Subas Pandey- The Hidden Gem
Shikha Subas Pandey is a right-arm medium pacer from Uttar Pradesh. She made her One Day International (ODI) debut against England in August 2014 and her Test debut against England in august 2014. In October 2019, she was named to India’s squad for the 2019 ICC Women’s World Twenty20.
Jemimah Rodrigues- The youngest ladder
Jemimah Rodrigues is a 19-year-old cricketer from Mumbai. She is a Right-handed batsman and right-arm off-spin bowler. Rodrigues made her One Day International (ODI) debut against Australia on 12th March 2019. Rodrigues scored her maiden century in ODIs against Ireland in May 2018. She is the youngest Indian woman to score a century in ODIs. In June 2018, she was named to India’s squad for the 2018 Women’s World Twenty20.
In December 2020, Rodrigues was named to India’s squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
